    These figures were believed to be magical concubines for the deceased. This object may have been the lid for a box.

    Senet, from Egypt, is man's oldest board game. In Egypt, it was often placed in tombs because it was used in a religious gaming ritual performed in or near the tomb in accordance with the Book of the Dead. It was also intended as pastime for the afterlife. The game is also found in graves in the Levant and as far as Cyprus and Crete.

    In ancientEgypt, stone mace heads were first used nearly 6,000 years ago in the predynastic period. The earliest known are disc maces with odd but beautifully formed stones mounted perpendicularly to theirhandle. Maces as a weapon were used extensively inEgypt and neighboring Canaan. This rounded pear form of mace head, known as a "piriform," replaced the disc mace in the Naqada II period of pre-dynastic UpperEgypt (3600-3250 BC) and was used throughout the Naqada III period (3250-3100 BC).
